This blog contains information relating to my efforts in developing the SocialGeo tool for the open source Crabgrass networking tool. So far I've been looking through a lot of the CG documentation and learning Ruby on Rails. I have to say I'm not really a fan of Rails (yet at least). As someone who's used to PHP, I'm not a big fan of some of the implicit functionality of Ruby (like functions that auto-return the last evaluated value). Also, developing RoR in Windows is a NIGHTMARE due to all the command-line interaction required and the unix functionality that needs to be emulated.
Anyways, for the SocialGeo project, I've got the responsibility for the uploading portion. I'll be developing a tool to upload GeoServer documents so Crabgrass can aggregate and display GeoServer maps.
I've set up a Planet for the SocialGeo project, located at socialgeo.natestedman.com (for now at least). It's going to aggregate Joe, Felipe, and my posts about SocialGeo into a single source of information. Right now, it's fairly bare (except for this post), but I'm sure that it will fill up with a lot more information soon.
SocialGeo is an open source web application for sharing geographic data, currently in development. We're funded by the Rensselaer Center for Open Source Software, thanks to a donation from Sean O'Sullivan '85. SocialGeo is powered by the open source projects Crabgrass and GeoServer.
Planet SocialGeo is a collection of blog entries written by the primary developers of SocialGeo:
